SHATTERING THE GLASS CEILING

One of the main notions that accompany the “model minority” myth is that of the Asian American who quickly elevates to the highest levels of the workplace.  The common belief is that Asian Americans take jobs away from other minorities, and receive the high salaries that accompany the position.
However what many people, Asian and non-Asian Americans, fail to see how this assumption is false.  As Asian Americans work hard to rise in status, they hit a “glass ceiling.”  The glass ceiling is the limitation many Asian Americans come across as they drive to achieve their maximum potential.  Asian Americans aren’t viewed as potential candidates for high ranking positions, as managerial and executive positions are usually reserved for white Anglo Saxon men.  According to the Federal Glass Ceiling Commission, “Asians, whose average education level is almost twice that of the general population, are much less likely to become manager or executives.”  There is an invisible, yet present obstruction as Asian Americans strive for these same positions, yet are unable to get promoted past a certain point.
Despite their stereotype as being “educationally successful” and “hard-working,” examining the Analysis of U.S. Census Data demonstrates otherwise.  At ever level of education, “Anglos who work full time in California out-earn those in other ethnic groups.”

At each educational level, Asian Americans’ salaries aren’t indicative of their image as the “model minority.”  Contrary to popular belief, Asian Americans salaries are lower than many other races, especially in the first three educational levels.  From their stereotype, you would expect Asian Americans, on the average to earn more than many other races.  The stereotype that Asian Americans are handsomely rewarded for their merit is disproved by these findings.
