The image of perpetually foreign Asians is
deeply embedded in American society yet often left unnoticed or taken for
face value. This stereotype hinders Asian Americans, often unknowingly
on the part of both perpetrator and victim. Conceptions tied in with
the portrayal of the perpetually foreign “Asian,” including the inability
to fully speak and comprehend English and fundamental differences in thinking,
introduce limitations to Asian Americans looking to advance in American
society. Often Asian Americans are passed over for promotions because
of common conceptions of “fundamental differences” or a lack of adequate
communication skills, which limit the effectiveness of Asian Americans
in higher level positions.
